Olive Carter Rehabilitation Unit
The Olive Carter Unit is the first of many top quality residential treatment centres to be opened in the UK by Hunters Moor.
The unit specialises in helping people with thinking problems whose difficulties place them at risk of harming themselves or others. Admission to the unit gives clients the time, space and support to understand their difficulties and learn ways of dealing with them.
Facilities at the Olive Carter Unit
Clients may stay in the unit for a number of months so the environment has been made as homely as possible. There are 9 bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities and two of the bedrooms have a shared ensuite shower/toilet. There are communal lounge and dining rooms to encourage conversation, discussion and community spirit. We believe that fresh air and outside activities are good for rehabilitation so we provide safe outdoor areas for open air events and relaxation.
Using our many years of expertise we have designed the unit so that men and women with the whole range of physical and psychological needs associated with neurological problems can be accommodated. Therefore we have rooms which can be used for clients with serious physical as well as psychological problems. We also have dedicated rooms for those at risk of harming themselves as well as rooms and areas which can accommodate people of one sex who feel uncomfortable or vulnerable in the presence of those of the opposite sex.
There is also a therapy room and a kitchen where the day to day skills of life, can be taught, practiced and improved.
Our approach to rehabilitation
The main way skills which have been lost are relearned is by repetition, organisation and structure. Therefore the treatment programme is geared towards understanding what clients want to achieve, in terms of their rehabilitation, and constantly providing the framework in which they have the best chance of succeeding. For example, the unit has a routine which everyone sticks to. This routine involves getting up at a certain time, getting ready, having breakfast, going to therapy etc. The routine becomes set and gives clients the structure in which to live their life. This structure and learning gives them the skills to live as independently as they possibly can.
