Rehabilitation Units

We are currently working with the help of our partners - United Medical Enterprises Investment (UMEI)- to develop a number of residential treatment centres for clients with long term neurological problems. Located in key geographical areas around the UK, these centres will offer our clients an unrivalled level of treatment, support and care to help them achieve their full individual potential.

The Olive Carter Unit and the Janet Barnes Unit in South Birmingham are the first of these units to open their doors to 45 clients.

Each residential facility will offer the very best treatment by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team for a range of clients, with a wide variety of needs.

Brain Injury Rehabilitation

When most people think of brain injury they think of the physical problems that can follow the injury. However, brain injury is sadly often more complicated. Many people have significant cognitive problems. This means that they have difficulties with thinking, such as problems with memory, concentrating, multi-tasking and organising and planning their life. These problems need assessment and treatment from expert neuropsychologists. We use Dr Andrew Worthington and his team who are very well known in the UK as brain injury rehabilitation specialists - Head Wise. People can also have real issues with challenging behaviour after brain injury, such as physical and verbal aggression. These problems can be helped by expert rehabiliation programmes, as delivered at the Olive Carter unit. Our brain injury rehab team on the Olive Carter unit include the neuropsychology service as well as our consultant neuropsychiatrist, Dr Kanu Achinivu.

Our aim is to offer high quality, expert brain injury rehabilitation in order to get the injured person back home as soon as possible. We are not a nursing home. We are specialist neurorehabilitation centre.

Spinal Injury Rehabilitation

Spinal injury rehabilitation is a very specialist field. Hunters Moor is not an acute spinal injury unit and we do not offer surgery or medical management in the hours and days after spinal injury but we do offer an expert spinal injury rehabilitation programme for those who still need some more help before returning home. The spinal injury rehabilitation programme is run from the Janet Barnes unit. Our staff include experienced neurological physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The day to day rehabilitation is provided by our nursing staff and the rehabilitation assistants. Dr Elie Okirie is our consultant. He is a very experienced neurorehabilitation specialist. The whole programme is overseen by Prof Mike Barnes.

We can also help with emotional issues after spinal injury, such as depression and problems with adjustment and family issues. Our psychology staff are expert at helping these problems.

Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke is common and sadly not just in elderly people but also in the young person. Hunters Moor can help those who have had a stroke and provide an expert stroke rehabilitation programme with the aim of getting the person back home. When people think of stroke they think of physical problems, such as weakness down one side, slurred speech and drooping in the face. Other common physical problems are incontinence, swallowing difficulties and understanding speech as well as problems with writing and reading. Our expert stroke rehabilitation team at the Janet Barnes unit can help. We have a great team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists who work alongside our nursing and rehabilitation assistant staff. We have a really experienced consultant rehabilitation physician - Dr Elie Okirie - and the whole programme is supervised by Prof Mike Barnes.

We aim to provide a high quality stroke rehabilitation programme with the intention of getting the person back home as soon as possible.
